California Running Groups
California’s running scene is as diverse as the state itself. You’ve got ocean-side paths, mountain trails, city routes through some of the most iconic neighborhoods in the country, and weather that lets you run outdoors pretty much every day of the year. Wherever you are in California, there’s a running group nearby that fits what you’re looking for.
Los Angeles alone has more run clubs than most states. LA Leggers has been preparing runners for marathons since 1989 with over 1,000 members and pace groups for everyone from first-timers to Boston qualifiers.
South Central Run Club and WalkGood LA bring community-driven energy to neighborhoods that aren’t always represented in mainstream running culture. The LA Trail Runners Club takes advantage of the mountains surrounding the city for weekly group trail runs.
San Francisco has the Golden Gate Running Club, a volunteer-run nonprofit known for being one of the most affordable clubs in the city.
Over in San Diego, the San Diego Track Club and Pacific Beach Run Club keep things active along the coast. Sacramento has its own strong scene too, with the Sacramento Running Association connecting runners to local clubs, training programs, and a full race calendar.
If you’re a trail runner, California is hard to beat. Between the Sierra Nevada, state parks, and coastal preserves, the options for off-road running are endless. And in every major city, you’ll find brewery runs, store-based groups, and casual social clubs filling out the weekly calendar.
California doesn’t just have a running community. It has dozens of them, and they’re all waiting for you to show up and get after it.
