Long Beach is a coast-first running city, and that shapes every race day here. The default route runs flat along Ocean Boulevard, past Belmont Pier, and out toward the Queen Mary waterfront - the same pavement locals log miles on during weekday evenings and weekend mornings when the ocean breeze makes Southern California feel like the easiest place in the world to run.
When you want something different, Signal Hill and El Dorado Park offer genuine variety without leaving the city. The post-race culture leans hard into Belmont Shore and Downtown - finish lines here tend to spill into coffee shops and breweries rather than parking lots, which tells you something about the crowd you will be running with.
By the numbers
The Long Beach races that stand out on the numbers: the biggest field, and the longest unbroken run of editions.
Train for it
The fastest way to a start line is a standing group run. These Long Beach clubs welcome Half Marathon runners of all paces.
Browse all Long Beach run clubs →How we calculate these stats: RunSesh calculates these figures from the most recent published results of past editions, sourced from RunSignup. We show aggregates only: field size, winning and median times, and the cutoff. We never publish individual finisher tables. Last updated Oct 8, 2026.
Across the 15 RunSignup half marathon editions with published results on RunSesh, walkers and charity entrants included, the median finisher crossed in 2:17:38. The median last finisher took 3:20:00. Fields here run a wide range of paces, and there is clearly no pressure to be fast.
Fall, running September through November, is the busiest stretch with 18 races. December alone is the single busiest month at 9 races. If your training block lands in spring, April is the quietest month with just 1 race, so plan accordingly.
The course profile helps: the city's signature running is flat along the beach and waterfront, and the races that say what surface they run on are all on roads. Median fields at half marathon distance sit at 39 finishers, so you will not be lost in a crowd, but you will not be alone out there either.
Only 2 of the 55 races here have published any giveaway details at all, and both of those say they give a shirt. The other 53 have not said anything about shirts or medals - that is a silence, not a no. If a finisher's medal or race shirt matters to you, it is worth checking directly with each race before you register.
