St. Louis 5K racing is anchored in its parks and its river. Forest Park's perimeter loops, the Gateway Arch grounds, and the Great Rivers Greenway paths that thread the city together mean most courses here feel rooted in something real - the Arch on the horizon, the Mississippi at your shoulder, or the shade of a Victorian park canopy overhead.
Fall is when the city's running culture comes alive most visibly, and the Halloween-themed races clustered in late October give that season a particular character. The rest of the year has its moments too: a midwinter 5K when the greenways are quiet, a Thanksgiving morning on familiar streets. Whatever your training block looks like, St. Louis tends to meet you somewhere.
By the numbers
The Biggest and Longest-Running
The St. Louis races that stand out on the numbers: the biggest field, and the longest unbroken run of editions.
How we calculate these stats: RunSesh calculates these figures from the most recent published results of past editions, sourced from RunSignup. We show aggregates only: field size, winning and median times, and the cutoff. We never publish individual finisher tables. Last updated Oct 14, 2026.
Common Questions About Running a 5K in St. Louis
What kind of finish times should I expect at a St. Louis 5K?
Across the 4 RunSignup 5K editions with published results on RunSesh, walkers and charity entrants included, the median finish time was 38:43. The median winner crossed in 21:44, and the median last finisher came in at 1:27:09. Those numbers tell you the field is genuinely mixed - you won't be the only one out there taking your time.
Will I get a shirt at a St. Louis 5K?
Of the 13 races that say anything about giveaways, 11 say they give a shirt. None of the 14 races mention a medal. One race hasn't said anything about giveaways at all, so that one is a question mark.
Where can I find people to train with before race day?
St. Louis has a healthy group-run scene. Clubs active here include Achilles St. Louis, Big River Running, Big River Racing, Dogtown Running Club, Forest Park Track Club, Eureka Run Club, BWC Run, and Big Hump Hash House Harriers. Most of the action clusters around Forest Park and Tower Grove Park, where park loops connect directly to the surrounding neighborhoods.
Is there a St. Louis 5K that works as a first race?
Several races pair the 5K with a 1 Mile option, which can make the day feel lower-stakes if you're new - the 19th Annual Strides 5K Run & 1 Mile Walk, Hot Cider Hustle, The Great GO! St. Louis Halloween Race, and Creve Coeur Haunted Hustle 5k all do this.
Are there trail 5K races near St. Louis?
Yes, one race around St. Louis gets you off the pavement: 1 is a trail race.
