Chicago running is defined by the pull of Lake Michigan. Most runners here have their relationship with the Lakefront Trail - 18 miles of uninterrupted waterfront path linking beaches, marinas, and parks with the downtown skyline at your shoulder. Wind off the lake is a genuine factor in every season, and in winter it shifts the calculus of every planned outdoor mile.
Away from the water, the city layers route on route: The 606 elevated rail trail cuts a car-free corridor through Logan Square and Wicker Park, the Grant Park and Museum Campus circuit turns a run into an architectural tour, and the forest preserves just outside the city swap flat pavement for wooded trails and, at Swallow Cliff Woods, 125 limestone stairs straight up a bluff.

Browse all Chicago run clubs →How we calculate these stats: RunSesh calculates these figures from the most recent published results of past editions, sourced from RunSignup. We show aggregates only: field size, winning and median times, and the cutoff. We never publish individual finisher tables. Last updated Oct 14, 2026.
Across the 6 RunSignup 5K editions with published results on RunSesh, the median finisher crossed in 46:16 - walkers and charity entrants included. The median winning time across those same editions was 18:42, and the median last finisher came in at 1:24:06. Those numbers reflect a wide range of participants, so finishing anywhere in between puts you squarely in the field.
Fall is by far the busiest stretch, with 33 races between September and November. September alone has 19 races on the calendar - more than any other single month. If your training block peaks in summer, there are 15 races from June through August. February is the quietest month, with just 2 races.
Of the 60 races that say anything about giveaways, 56 say they give a shirt and 1 says it gives a medal. The remaining 4 races have not published any giveaway details, so they have not said either way.
Several clubs are active in the city:
The group running scene tends to cluster around the Lakefront Trail and downtown parks, with a strong Northwest Side presence along The 606.
