Racing in Chicago means the city is always in your peripheral vision. Whether a course hugs the Lakefront Trail with Lake Michigan to one side and the skyline to the other, cuts through Grant Park past Buckingham Fountain, or threads the neighborhoods off The 606, the backdrop does work that most race courses cannot. Wind off the lake is part of the deal, whatever the season.
Chicago runs year-round in a way that demands honest prep. Summer races arrive in heat and humidity that rewards an early start, and fall brings the conditions most runners here call their favorite - cool air, low wind, and the city at its sharpest. The running community spreads from Lakeview and the Loop out through Logan Square and Uptown, and there is almost always a group heading out from somewhere near the water.
By the numbers
The Chicago races that stand out on the numbers: the biggest field, and the longest unbroken run of editions.
Train for it
The fastest way to a start line is a standing group run. These Chicago clubs welcome 5K runners of all paces.
Browse all Chicago run clubs →How we calculate these stats: RunSesh calculates these figures from the most recent published results of past editions, sourced from RunSignup. We show aggregates only: field size, winning and median times, and the cutoff. We never publish individual finisher tables. Last updated Oct 15, 2026.
Across the 6 RunSignup 5K editions with published results on RunSesh - walkers and charity entrants included - the median finish time was 46:16, and the median field size was 1,014 runners. The median last finisher crossed at 1:24:06. These are big, mixed fields with a wide spread of paces, so there is almost certainly a cluster of people running right alongside you.
Fall is by far the busiest stretch, with 31 races running from September through November and September alone accounting for 17 of them. If your training block lands in spring, options are thin - only 1 race runs March through May. Winter actually offers more than you might expect, with 13 races across December through February.
Of the 57 races that publish any giveaway details, 54 say they give a shirt. None of the 57 mention a medal. The remaining 2 have not said anything about giveaways either way.
Several clubs are active in the city:
Group runs tend to cluster around the Lakefront Trail, Grant Park, and The 606 corridor, so there is likely a crew starting near wherever you are based.
