Running Clubs in Wisconsin

Every running club in Wisconsin's directory is based in Milwaukee, so this page is really the story of one city's running scene, stitched along the lakefront and river downtown, out through the Third Ward, and into the bluffs and glacial hills west of the city.

It's built for both a quick weekday loop before work and a long Saturday out toward Kettle Moraine, with plenty of room to walk if that's your pace. Picking a club here mostly comes down to your night, your budget, and whether you want pavement or dirt.

Running in Wisconsin

Group runs cluster east of I-43 along the Milwaukee RiverWalk, where the Historic Third Ward's flat promenades link breweries, museums and quick post run food, which is exactly where Performance Running Outfitters gathers its Monday, Wednesday and Saturday crowd. Head north along the water and you're in Milwaukee Running Group - OMG territory, based out of Lake Park Pavilion and Colectivo on the lakefront, with runs going out almost every day of the week.

Farther west, Glacial Trail Runners of Greater Milwaukee heads for Lapham Peak State Forest and the Kettle Moraine, trading the flat Oak Leaf Trail and RiverWalk pavement for real hills and singletrack. Juneau Park, Mitchell Park's Domes and Zocalo Food Park each anchor their own regulars closer to downtown, while the Root River Parkway and the bluffs at Grant Park give the rest of the metro shaded, water adjacent miles when the lakefront gets crowded.

Winters push some of this indoors, but the river and lake paths keep most groups running outside for the bulk of the year.

How to Choose a Wisconsin Running Club

If Saturday is the day you've got, you're in luck, five clubs meet then, more than any other day. Tuesday is the next best weeknight option with four clubs running, while Friday has just one, so if that's your only free evening, your choices narrow fast.

Cost shouldn't hold you back either way: five of the eight clubs are completely free to run with, and only three ask for dues or a fee, all of them modest.

If you'd rather get off pavement, five clubs list trail terrain in their runs, tied to the parkways and forest west of the city. And almost every club here, seven of eight, lets you show up without joining anything first, so turning up alone on a Tuesday or Saturday is completely normal.

Common Questions About Running Clubs in Wisconsin

Which Milwaukee running clubs are free to run with?

Five of the eight Milwaukee clubs don't charge anything to run with them: Black Men Run Milwaukee, Buena Tierra Run Club, City Limits Run Club, FEAR Run Club (runs are free, though there's an optional $200 annual membership for gear and events), and Performance Running Outfitters Group Runs.

Which Milwaukee clubs charge dues or a fee?

Three clubs ask for some payment: Badgerland Striders, Glacial Trail Runners of Greater Milwaukee ($5 to $6 a year), and Milwaukee Running Group - OMG ($5 in annual dues). None of it is expensive, but it isn't free either.

Are there Saturday group runs in Milwaukee?

Yes, Saturday is the busiest day for club running in Milwaukee, with five clubs meeting: Black Men Run Milwaukee, City Limits Run Club, FEAR Run Club, Milwaukee Running Group - OMG, and Performance Running Outfitters Group Runs.

Where can I run trails with a Milwaukee running club?

Five clubs list trail terrain among their runs:

  • City Limits Run Club
  • FEAR Run Club
  • Glacial Trail Runners of Greater Milwaukee
  • Milwaukee Running Group - OMG
  • Performance Running Outfitters Group Runs

Glacial Trail Runners heads specifically to Lapham Peak State Forest and the Kettle Moraine for trail miles.

Do I need to join a club before I can just show up?

No, for almost all of them. Seven of the eight Milwaukee clubs let you turn up without joining anything first. The one exception is Glacial Trail Runners of Greater Milwaukee, which asks for a small annual membership of $5 to $6 before you run with them.

Will I be the only one walking, or the only beginner?

No. All eight clubs in Milwaukee say beginners are welcome and that walkers are welcome too, so run/walk paces and first timers are the norm at any of them, not the exception.

Where this comes from: Club details come from each club’s own channels (their site, Meetup, Strava and social posts) and are checked by hand. Group runs move, so confirm the meeting spot on the club’s latest post before you head out.
