Houston racing is shaped by the same bayous and park loops that define daily training here. The course under your feet on race day is likely the same greenway, crushed gravel, or bayou-side path you already know from morning runs along Buffalo Bayou, through Memorial Park, or around the Rice University loop - familiar ground, which takes a lot of the guesswork out of pacing.
Summer races here are a genuine test of heat tolerance, and locals know it. Paid entry fees run from $24.99 to $75, with a typical fee of $30. One race is free to enter. Five races already have a price increase scheduled, so if you see one you want, registering early is the practical move - the calendar price is the cheapest it will be.
Field sizes vary. The Red, White and Blue Half Marathon - Houston, for example, had a published field of 169 finishers - a size where you will not be lost in a crowd but you will not be racing alone either. Most races here have not published field-size data, so that single figure is the clearest read we have on what a smaller Houston half marathon actually feels like on the ground.
