About the Samson Stomp
The course winds through the zoo itself, on paved walkways past the animal exhibits. It runs in winter, so expect cold and possibly snow underfoot. The race honors Samson, a silverback gorilla who lived at the zoo for decades, and the entry fees go toward supporting the zoo's animals. Strollers and skates are not allowed on course.
There is a conservation angle built into race morning: the zoo collects old handheld electronics near the start area, with the recycling effort tied directly to protecting gorilla habitat in the Congo region. After the race, the zoo stays open for the rest of the day, so most people stick around.
