About the New Year's Day 5K & Fun Run

The course runs on the Katy Trail, a paved urban trail that cuts through uptown Dallas. The shorter distance shares the trail with the longer one, and both are flat enough that the effort stays manageable. Dogs are welcome along the fun run portion, though not on the longer course.

Packet pickup happens over the couple of days before the race at a running shop in Hillside Village Shopping Center, with a race-morning window at the venue if you miss it. The start and finish are at Katy Trail Ice House, an open-air beer garden right on the trail. Brunch runs after the race, with breakfast tacos and mimosas or beer available at the finish.

Common Questions About the New Year's Day 5K & Fun Run

Will I finish last at the New Year's Day 5K & Fun Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 35:30, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:05:34, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the New Year's Day 5K & Fun Run a good first 5K?

A field of 452 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the New Year's Day 5K & Fun Run?

The 5K winner ran 18:19 while the median finisher took 35:30. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.

Where can I train for the New Year's Day 5K & Fun Run?

Join a local run club. 214 Run Club, Dallas Running Club, Run It Up Dallas and others in Dallas welcome runners of all paces, and a weekly group run is the most reliable way to hold a training block together.
