About the Redwood (Summer) Trail Run

The courses here run through the hills above Oakland on a mix of wide dirt roads and narrower single track, with very little pavement. The shorter distances stay mellower underfoot, while the longer options pile on serious elevation, gaining more and more the further out you go. Expect rolling to steep grades depending on which distance you choose.

Everything happens at the Chabot Space & Science Center, where check-in opens race morning. Parking is free on site. Runners going long can bring a drop bag with non-valuables to stash at the start and finish area, which is worth planning around.

Common Questions About the Redwood (Summer) Trail Run

Will I finish last at the Redwood (Summer) Trail Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:35:32, and the last recorded finisher came in around 5:27:30, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Redwood (Summer) Trail Run a good first 13.1 Miles?

It is a small race (99 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Redwood (Summer) Trail Run?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:26:45 while the median finisher took 2:35:32. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.

Where can I train for the Redwood (Summer) Trail Run?

Join a local run club. Oakland Beer Runners and others in Oakland welcome runners of all paces, and a weekly group run is the most reliable way to hold a training block together.
