About the Redwood (Spring) Trail Run

The courses run through Redwood Park east of downtown Oakland, mixing wide dirt roads with stretches of single-track through the trees. The shorter distances stay relatively gentle, while the longer options pile up serious climbing across rolling, wooded terrain. Drop bags are allowed at the start and finish area for runners on the longer distances.

Check-in opens race morning at the Chabot Space & Science Center. Parking there is free. Arrive with enough time before your start to get your bib and get moving.

Common Questions About the Redwood (Spring) Trail Run

Will I finish last at the Redwood (Spring) Trail Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:36:06, and the last recorded finisher came in around 4:27:37, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Redwood (Spring) Trail Run a good first 13.1 Miles?

It is a small race (110 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Redwood (Spring) Trail Run?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:39:09 while the median finisher took 2:36:06. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.

Where can I train for the Redwood (Spring) Trail Run?

Join a local run club. Oakland Beer Runners and others in Oakland welcome runners of all paces, and a weekly group run is the most reliable way to hold a training block together.
