About the Oakland Hills Trail Run

The course runs through a redwood forest tucked into the hills east of downtown Oakland. The trees are tall enough to block out most of the sky, and the groves stay quiet even when the city is close. Beyond the redwoods, the park opens into chaparral and grassland, so the terrain and the light keep changing as you move through it. Deer and the occasional golden eagle are genuinely possible.

How we calculate these stats: RunSesh calculates these figures from the most recent published results of past editions, sourced from RunSignup. We show aggregates only: field size, winning and median times, and the cutoff. We never publish individual finisher tables. Last updated Oct 24, 2026.

Common Questions About the Oakland Hills Trail Run

Will I finish last at the Oakland Hills Trail Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.2 Miles field finished slower than 2:57:57, and the last recorded finisher came in around 5:12:07, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Oakland Hills Trail Run a good first 13.2 Miles?

It is a small race (108 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.2 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Oakland Hills Trail Run?

The 13.2 Miles winner ran 1:53:06 while the median finisher took 2:57:57. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.

Where can I train for the Oakland Hills Trail Run?

Join a local run club. Oakland Beer Runners and others in Oakland welcome runners of all paces, and a weekly group run is the most reliable way to hold a training block together.
