About This Club

DC Road Runners is a nonprofit club that has been organizing runs in the DC metro area since 1961. They run four days a week, from early-morning track sessions to a Saturday long run, with structured pace groups that cover a wide enough range to include both sub-8-minute milers and run-walkers. If you want a club with actual schedule consistency and races built into the calendar, this is worth a serious look.

Who It Suits

This club suits runners who want structure, a real schedule, and a pace group that actually matches where they are right now, whether that is a brisk 8-minute mile or a run-walk at 12 or 13 minutes.

It also suits anyone who wants coached track workouts or races baked into the training calendar. If you want something purely casual with no structure and no commitment to a specific location or time, this level of organization might feel like more than you need.

What a Run With Them Is Like

The Saturday long run is the anchor, going 10 to 16 miles at a conversational pace, with designated pace leaders running groups from around 7:30-8:00 min/mile all the way out to a 12:00-13:00 min/mile run-walk option. Weekday runs cover 4 to 6 miles on road and mixed urban routes.

The Wednesday and Thursday sessions are coached track workouts, which is a different animal from a casual group run, so know what you are signing up for on those days. In summer, Saturday starts at 7:00 am instead of 8:00 am.

Your First Run

Weekly runs are open to prospective members at no cost, so you can show up and try it before you spend anything. They meet at Washington-Liberty High School and Yorktown High School depending on the run, so check their site or social channels to confirm which location applies to the run you are joining.

On the Saturday long run, the pace groups are organized in advance, which means you will not be guessing where you fit or quietly trying to keep up with people going faster than you. Runs go in rain or shine except in extreme weather, so if you are showing up on a drizzly Saturday, they almost certainly will be too.
