About the Winter Dragon Race

The course runs through Pearsall Park on soft, man-made dirt roads that sit south of downtown. The terrain has real hills, so expect some work, but the surroundings are pleasant and the footing is forgiving. It runs trail, not pavement, which changes the feel of the effort considerably.

After finishing, there are chicken fajitas, hot coffee, hot cocoa, and sweet bread at the post-race area, served while you recover on the grounds.

Common Questions About the Winter Dragon Race

Will I finish last at the Winter Dragon Race?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 37:30, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:12:13, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Winter Dragon Race a good first 3.1 Miles?

It is a small race (77 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Winter Dragon Race?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 22:00 while the median finisher took 37:30. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.

Where can I train for the Winter Dragon Race?

Join a local run club. Dreamers, In The Loop Run Crew, Urban Run Club SATX and others in San Antonio welcome runners of all paces, and a weekly group run is the most reliable way to hold a training block together.
