About the Texas Sun Showdown Half Marathon, Relay & 5k

The course does a couple of loops for the half marathon, which means you pass through the finish area before you are done. The relay option lets teams split the distance, and there are categories for open, masters, and military groups. The 5K runs a separate route. Texas barbecue is at the finish.

Packet pickup runs at a local running store called iRun Bitters across the two days before the race, with a race-morning window as well. Pick up relay batons on race day under the event tent. Your bib needs to be visible at the finish to get to the food.

Common Questions About the Texas Sun Showdown Half Marathon, Relay & 5k

Will I finish last at the Texas Sun Showdown Half Marathon, Relay & 5k?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 35:56, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:06:16, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Texas Sun Showdown Half Marathon, Relay & 5k a good first 5K?

It is a small race (144 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Texas Sun Showdown Half Marathon, Relay & 5k?

The 5K winner ran 20:33 while the median finisher took 35:56. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.

Where can I train for the Texas Sun Showdown Half Marathon, Relay & 5k?

Join a local run club. Dreamers, In The Loop Run Crew, Urban Run Club SATX and others in San Antonio welcome runners of all paces, and a weekly group run is the most reliable way to hold a training block together.
