Phoenix running is shaped by the desert in every direction - canals that cut flat corridors through the city, red rock formations at Papago Park, and trail networks in South Mountain and the Phoenix Mountain Preserve that gain serious elevation fast. The terrain shifts dramatically depending on which direction you head out the door, which keeps training interesting year-round.
Summer is its own negotiation: Phoenix runners know the canal paths are lit for a reason, and pre-dawn starts are not optional from May through September. Fall brings the city back outdoors in force, and the post-run culture around Tempe Town Lake and the Grand Canalscape reflects just how much this city organizes its social life around the run.

The Biggest and Longest-Running
The Phoenix races that stand out on the numbers: the biggest field, and the longest unbroken run of editions.
How we calculate these stats: RunSesh calculates these figures from the most recent published results of past editions, sourced from RunSignup. We show aggregates only: field size, winning and median times, and the cutoff. We never publish individual finisher tables. Last updated Oct 25, 2026.
Common Questions About Running a Half Marathon in Phoenix
When is the best time of year to race a half marathon in Phoenix?
Fall (September to November) is the busiest stretch, with 12 races on the calendar - a reflection of Phoenix's cooler running season kicking in after the summer heat. Winter (December to February) is the next busiest with 10 races. If you want company out there and comfortable racing temperatures, fall is when the city shows up.
Do these races give out shirts or medals?
Every one of the 28 races says it includes a shirt. None have published information about a medal, which means they have not said either way - that is not a confirmation there is no medal, just that they have not announced one.
Is there a running club in Phoenix I can train with ahead of a race?
Several clubs operate in the area:
PHX Run Club
Valley Runners Run Club
Mikkeller Running Club Phoenix
Aravaipa Group Runs
USA FIT Phoenix
Sole Sports Group Runs
Surprise Running Club
That is a solid range of options whether you want a casual weekend group or something more structured.
How competitive are these races - will I be way at the back of the pack?
None of the 28 Phoenix half marathons here have published finish-time results, so there is no field data to draw on for a real comparison. What the race names suggest - themed runs like the Sloth Run, Bagel Run, and Run for Coffee Lovers - points toward a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere rather than a purely competitive one. But without published results, that is the honest answer: we do not know the field breakdown.
