About the Green Lake Sole 5K Run

The course starts at the basketball courts near East Green Lake Beach, loops around the lake, then swings out around the playfields before returning to where you started. It is a mostly flat route on paths that circle a popular urban park. The race is hand-timed, and mornings at the lake tend to run cool and wet, so dress for it.

Check-in opens well before the gun at the basketball courts, and parking is available at East Green Lake Beach, with neighborhood street parking as a backup if that lot fills. Neither dogs nor strollers are allowed on the course. Entry fees benefit YouthCare, a Seattle organization that helps young people experiencing homelessness, with proceeds going toward purchasing shoes for youth in their programs.

Common Questions About the Green Lake Sole 5K Run

Will I finish last at the Green Lake Sole 5K Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 30:36, and the last recorded finisher came in around 47:53, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Green Lake Sole 5K Run a good first 5K?

It is a small race (28 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Green Lake Sole 5K Run?

The 5K winner ran 18:47 while the median finisher took 30:36. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.

Where can I train for the Green Lake Sole 5K Run?

Join a local run club. Club Northwest, Seattle Running Club, West Seattle Running Club and others in Seattle welcome runners of all paces, and a weekly group run is the most reliable way to hold a training block together.
