About the Bakersfield Marathon

The course runs point to point through Bakersfield's older neighborhoods, finishing at the Kern County Museum, a historic site that gives the finish line some real character. The route passes through scenic and historic parts of the city, with aid stations placed along the way and first-aid coverage at several of them.

Packet pickup happens the day before at the Kern County Museum, which also serves as the finish. Parking on race day is split between the museum and a nearby college campus, with road closures in effect around Chester Avenue, so checking the posted maps before you drive in is worth doing. A festival and beer garden open at the finish as runners come in.

Common Questions About the Bakersfield Marathon

Will I finish last at the Bakersfield Marathon?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.7 Miles field finished slower than 53:25, and the last recorded finisher came in around 2:24:44, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Bakersfield Marathon a good first 3.7 Miles?

With 1,287 finishers there are runners at every pace, so you are never out on your own. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.7 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Bakersfield Marathon?

The 3.7 Miles winner ran 22:40 while the median finisher took 53:25. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
