About the Wheeling Turkey Trot

The Wheeling Turkey Trot takes place on Thanksgiving morning on the campus of a local university, with a children's fun run and a road race sharing the same start area. The course serves runners and walkers alike, and the surroundings are a university campus setting rather than open roads or trails.

Packet pickup is available at the Parks and Recreation office on the two days before the race, which most people find easier than race-morning pickup. On race day, registration and pickup open at the McDonough Center before the start. After finishing, snacks and refreshments are set up inside the McDonough Center, and an awards ceremony follows shortly after.

Common Questions About the Wheeling Turkey Trot

Will I finish last at the Wheeling Turkey Trot?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 38:35, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:01:52, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Wheeling Turkey Trot a good first 5K?

A field of 395 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Wheeling Turkey Trot?

The 5K winner ran 17:03 while the median finisher took 38:35. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
