About the Viking Relays & Races

The course runs a loop through South Mastick park inside the Rocky River Reservation, and you will come through the same stretch repeatedly depending on which event you entered. The terrain is park trail, the surroundings are wooded, and the format ranges from a short relay to a timed endurance run where you simply keep going until the clock runs out. Dogs and strollers are not permitted on the course.

Packet pickup is available the evening before at the Hermes office on the west side of Cleveland, with race-morning pickup starting well before the first wave goes out. The start and finish are both at the Cottonwood Picnic Pavilion, so there is a fixed home base for relay teams waiting on their runners.

Common Questions About the Viking Relays & Races

Will I finish last at the Viking Relays & Races?

Almost certainly not. Half the 4 Miles field finished slower than 43:28, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:22:52, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Viking Relays & Races a good first 4 Miles?

It is a small race (102 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 4 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Viking Relays & Races?

The 4 Miles winner ran 26:49 while the median finisher took 43:28. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
