About the Stairway 5k by Ode to Laz

Two races share the same staircase at Holly Recreation Area, but they are very different days. The easier option runs a rolling out-and-back on the Wilderness trail and finishes with a single descent and climb of the Stairway to Heaven. The harder one repeats that same climb again and again for the full distance, back to back, with no rest between repeats and serious vertical gain by the end.

Both races start from the Overlook Picnic area, with registration opening well before each wave. The weekend is part of a larger backyard ultra festival, so when you arrive you may pass runners who have been going since the previous day, still circling the same loop.

Common Questions About the Stairway 5k by Ode to Laz

Will I finish last at the Stairway 5k by Ode to Laz?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 42:33, and the last recorded finisher came in around 55:25, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Stairway 5k by Ode to Laz a good first 3.1 Miles?

It is a small race (25 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Stairway 5k by Ode to Laz?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 27:16 while the median finisher took 42:33. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
