About the Silver Bells 5K

The course runs through downtown Lansing, starting and finishing near the Capitol. It is a marked road course with no significant hills, so you can look around at the city rather than watch your footing. A costume contest runs alongside the race, with categories for holiday sweaters and movie characters, which gives the start area a different energy than most race mornings.

Packet pickup is available the evening before at a running store in Okemos, and again race morning on the Capitol Lawn before the gun. Street parking in the city is free on race day. Age group awards are handed out at the sponsor tent after the race wraps up.

Finish-Time Stats

Common Questions About the Silver Bells 5K

Will I finish last at the Silver Bells 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 37:10, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:09:02, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Silver Bells 5K a good first 5K?

With 1,091 finishers there are runners at every pace, so you are never out on your own. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Silver Bells 5K?

The 5K winner ran 14:59 while the median finisher took 37:10. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
