About the Run For The Stripes

The race takes place at the Philadelphia Zoo, which gives it a setting most road races cannot match. The route runs through zoo grounds, so there are animals visible along the way. The event also offers a virtual option for those who cannot make it in person. The cause behind it is raising awareness and funds for neuroendocrine cancer research.

Merchandise is available for purchase through the registration site or on race day itself. The organizers keep the store open well past the initial registration window, so you are not locked into buying anything upfront.

Common Questions About the Run For The Stripes

Will I finish last at the Run For The Stripes?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 30:28, and the last recorded finisher came in around 54:21, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Run For The Stripes a good first 3.1 Miles?

It is a small race (176 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Run For The Stripes?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 18:16 while the median finisher took 30:28. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.

Where can I train for the Run For The Stripes?

Join a local run club. Fairmount Running Club, Philadelphia Runner Track Club, Wissahickon Wanderers and others in Philadelphia welcome runners of all paces, and a weekly group run is the most reliable way to hold a training block together.
