About This Club

West Philly Runners is a free, no-membership community run club based out of Clark Park in West Philadelphia. They meet twice a week, Wednesday evenings for group runs and Monday evenings for speed work, so if you want more than one run on your calendar this is a club worth knowing about.

Who It Suits

This club suits someone who wants a structured twice-a-week running habit in West Philly without paying for it, and who likes the idea of a beer at a local spot after the Wednesday run. If you need a pace group significantly slower than 12 minutes per mile, they are honest that their typical group runs faster than that, so it is worth reaching out to them directly before your first Wednesday.

What a Run With Them Is Like

Wednesday nights at Clark Park you pick your distance, 2, 4, or 6 miles, which means you are not locked into one pace or one effort level for the evening. The routes run on city streets, sidewalks, and park paths, so expect urban terrain rather than trails.

They say all paces are welcome, with the typical group running around a 12-minute mile or faster. Monday speed workouts happen at Penn Park at 5:30 pm, a different animal from the Wednesday social run.

Your First Run

Show up to the corner of 44th Street and Baltimore Avenue at Clark Park by 6:30 pm on a Wednesday. You do not need to register, pay, or sign up in advance, just turn up.

The 2-mile option exists specifically for nights when you are not feeling 6 miles or you are testing the waters for the first time. If you are running a 12-minute mile you are squarely within the range they describe, and nothing about showing up alone is unusual here, that is how most people start.
