About the Run For Rangers

The half marathon is the centerpiece here, run entirely on the forestry service roads that Army Rangers use for training at Camp Merrill. The course winds through the Appalachian Mountains, close to the Appalachian Trail, with two serious climbs that earn their reputation. The shorter distances run through Hancock Park in historic downtown Dahlonega.

The weekend lines up with Veterans Day, so downtown hosts a parade and a full day of live music. After the half marathon, food, beer, wine, and a full menu are available at the on-post club. Parking around Dahlonega is described as plentiful for both race days.

Common Questions About the Run For Rangers

Will I finish last at the Run For Rangers?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 32:02, and the last recorded finisher came in around 47:03, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Run For Rangers a good first 3.1 Miles?

It is a small race (37 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Run For Rangers?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 21:01 while the median finisher took 32:02. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
