About the Race to Home Plate 5k

The course runs at Fifth Third Park, a minor league ballpark in Spartanburg, which gives it a setting you do not get at most road races. The route takes you out into the surrounding area and brings you back to the park, so the stadium itself serves as a landmark throughout the morning.

Packet pickup opens race morning at the left gate concourse of the park before the start. Top overall finishers in both the men's and women's fields earn gift certificates to a local running store.

Common Questions About the Race to Home Plate 5k

Will I finish last at the Race to Home Plate 5k?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 33:29, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:10:42, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Race to Home Plate 5k a good first 5K?

It is a small race (148 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Race to Home Plate 5k?

The 5K winner ran 19:14 while the median finisher took 33:29. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
