About the Philly Mayor's Cup

The Mayor's Cup is a club team competition, not a race where you run for yourself. Philadelphia running clubs send their members across several distance events on a single day, all sharing one start and finish area at Belmont Plateau. Points go to clubs based on where their runners place, and the club with the most wins the cup.

Parking at the plateau is tight, and the organizers are upfront about that. SEPTA buses serve the park, and carpooling is encouraged if you do drive. There is an athlete village area where club teammates gather, which makes it feel more like a team meet than a typical road race morning.

Common Questions About the Philly Mayor's Cup

Will I finish last at the Philly Mayor's Cup?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5 Miles field finished slower than 44:47, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:10:16, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Philly Mayor's Cup a good first 5 Miles?

It is a small race (176 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Philly Mayor's Cup?

The 5 Miles winner ran 24:55 while the median finisher took 44:47. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.

Where can I train for the Philly Mayor's Cup?

Join a local run club. Fairmount Running Club, Philadelphia Runner Track Club, Wissahickon Wanderers and others in Philadelphia welcome runners of all paces, and a weekly group run is the most reliable way to hold a training block together.
