About the National Capital 20 Miler and Janet Braunstein 5 Miler

The course runs along the C&O Towpath, a packed-dirt and gravel path that follows the Potomac River. It is an out-and-back, so the route is flat and straight with no real navigation to think about. Aid stations with water and nutrition are spread through the course. The longer option is built for runners training toward a fall marathon.

Common Questions About the National Capital 20 Miler and Janet Braunstein 5 Miler

Will I finish last at the National Capital 20 Miler and Janet Braunstein 5 Miler?

Almost certainly not. Half the 20 Miles field finished slower than 1:29:37, and the last recorded finisher came in around 2:32:02, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the National Capital 20 Miler and Janet Braunstein 5 Miler a good first 20 Miles?

It is a small race (85 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 20 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the National Capital 20 Miler and Janet Braunstein 5 Miler?

The 20 Miles winner ran 1:01:39 while the median finisher took 1:29:37. That spread points to a relatively quick field, so expect a competitive front end.
