About the Kraken

The Kraken is held in Sarasota, starting from a park on Center Road. The course offers several distance options, so runners at different points in their training tend to show up alongside people out for a casual morning. Age group awards go several places deep for both men and women, so there is genuine competition at the front while the back stays unhurried.

Packet pickup is race morning only, so arriving early matters. Packets not collected before the start are forfeited, and there is no alternative pickup the evening before. A group stretch happens shortly before the gun. Breakfast taco wraps and drinks are at the finish line, and the race benefits Hunger End, a Feeding America partner.

Finish-Time Stats

Going by the 2026 results, this is a small, friendly field, and the spread of finish times is wide, so this is a mostly recreational race rather than one for club runners.

Common Questions About the Kraken

Will I finish last at the Kraken?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 30:42, and the last recorded finisher came in around 53:16, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Kraken a good first 5K?

It is a small race (54 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Kraken?

The 5K winner ran 16:05 while the median finisher took 30:42. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
