About the Heart of the Desert Wine Run 5k

The course runs through the grounds of a pistachio and wine estate on the edge of Alamogordo, so the surroundings are agricultural rather than urban. Rows of grapevines line the property, and the scenery is open desert landscape. Age group awards are available, and competitive runners are directed to seed themselves at the front.

Pickup happens on race morning, with enough time before the start to get sorted without rushing. There is a wine pour at the finish, which is the main draw for a lot of people here.

Common Questions About the Heart of the Desert Wine Run 5k

Will I finish last at the Heart of the Desert Wine Run 5k?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 39:03, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:19:36, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Heart of the Desert Wine Run 5k a good first 5K?

A field of 389 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Heart of the Desert Wine Run 5k?

The 5K winner ran 19:34 while the median finisher took 39:03. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
