About the Glow in the Garden 5k

The course runs along the Rock River Recreation Path at night, lit up with black lights, laser lights, and uplights the whole way. It passes through a conservatory and garden setting, then loops through a neighboring area before heading back south to the finish. The path is paved and flat, and the glow setup makes it feel more like a night-out than a morning race.

Packet pickup runs the evening before at Nicholas Conservatory, with a second window at the start line before the race. Parking fills up, so arriving early helps; overflow lots are available nearby, including at a YMCA to the south. A free trolley runs along the riverfront between parking areas. After the finish, there are wishing lanterns on the lagoon and activities in the outdoor gardens.

Finish-Time Stats

Going by the 2025 results, this is a small, friendly field, and the spread of finish times is wide, so this is a mostly recreational race rather than one for club runners.

Common Questions About the Glow in the Garden 5k

Will I finish last at the Glow in the Garden 5k?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 38:28, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:09:00, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Glow in the Garden 5k a good first 5K?

A field of 277 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Glow in the Garden 5k?

The 5K winner ran 18:33 while the median finisher took 38:28. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
