About the Frosty Squatchy

The Frosty Squatchy runs through South Mountain Reservation, starting and finishing at the Turtleback Rock Picnic Area near Walker Road. It is a trail course, which means roots, rocks, and ground that shifts under your feet. Distance options range from a short loop to timed formats that let you decide how long you want to be out there.

The event raises money for the South Mountain Conservancy, the local nonprofit that stewards the reservation. That gives the morning a purpose beyond the run itself. Runners and hikers are both welcome, so the pace range is wide and nobody is in a hurry to clear the course.

Common Questions About the Frosty Squatchy

Will I finish last at the Frosty Squatchy?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 36:55, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:15:00, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Frosty Squatchy a good first 5K?

It is a small race (21 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Frosty Squatchy?

The 5K winner ran 24:12 while the median finisher took 36:55. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
