About the First State Half Marathon & 10K

The course winds through downtown Newark, out into surrounding neighborhoods, and onto paved trails, so the scenery shifts as you go. It is not a loop that brings you back through the same streets repeatedly; the route feels more like a tour of the town than a circuit.

Packet pickup is at the Deer Park Tavern on race morning, a short window before the start, so arriving early matters. The post-race gathering is at the same tavern, which makes the finish feel like it has somewhere to land rather than just a parking lot to clear out of.

Common Questions About the First State Half Marathon & 10K

Will I finish last at the First State Half Marathon & 10K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 1:59:37, and the last recorded finisher came in around 3:25:13, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the First State Half Marathon & 10K a good first 13.1 Miles?

A field of 411 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the First State Half Marathon & 10K?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:10:00 while the median finisher took 1:59:37. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
