About the Fallen Heroes 5 Miler

The course runs through downtown Fredericksburg, starting and finishing at a high school track. The route takes you through city streets, so expect pavement throughout. The race is part of a local grand prix series and benefits a non-profit supporting veterans and first responders in the area, which gives the morning a purposeful feel without being heavy about it.

Packet pickup is available at a local running shop on a couple of days before the race. There is also morning pickup at the high school parking lot before the start, though that option carries an added fee. Prizes go to overall top finishers by gender, and there is a separate award for the best patriotic outfit, male and female.

Common Questions About the Fallen Heroes 5 Miler

Will I finish last at the Fallen Heroes 5 Miler?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5 Miles field finished slower than 58:05, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:58:43, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Fallen Heroes 5 Miler a good first 5 Miles?

A field of 460 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Fallen Heroes 5 Miler?

The 5 Miles winner ran 26:04 while the median finisher took 58:05. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
