About the Dog Days of Summer - 5K, 10K, 10M, and Half Marathon

The course runs along the beach path at Alamitos Beach, out and back along the shoreline. It is an open path, so you share it with pedestrians and cyclists throughout, and the turns are marked with chalk and flags. The pier sits roughly at the midpoint, where there is a water station. The finish line has water, sports drink, gels, and fruit.

Bibs can be picked up the evening before at Sports Basement Long Beach, with race-morning pickup also available. Parking in the nearby lots is paid by the hour through a phone app, and street parking is available but fills early. After the race, a nonprofit dog rescue group brings dogs out for photos on the beach, open to anyone wearing a race bib.

Common Questions About the Dog Days of Summer - 5K, 10K, 10M, and Half Marathon

Will I finish last at the Dog Days of Summer - 5K, 10K, 10M, and Half Marathon?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 37:53, and the last recorded finisher came in around 3:20:00, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Dog Days of Summer - 5K, 10K, 10M, and Half Marathon a good first 5K?

It is a small race (34 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Dog Days of Summer - 5K, 10K, 10M, and Half Marathon?

The 5K winner ran 26:30 while the median finisher took 37:53. That spread points to a relatively quick field, so expect a competitive front end.

Where can I train for the Dog Days of Summer - 5K, 10K, 10M, and Half Marathon?

Join a local run club. Long Beach Run Club, Long Beach Running Club, Long Beach Frontrunners and others in Long Beach welcome runners of all paces, and a weekly group run is the most reliable way to hold a training block together.
