About the Dirty Wookie 10K & 5K

The Dirty Wookie is a Halloween-themed road race in downtown Reno. The shorter distance is an out-and-back through Idlewild Park, starting and finishing at the J Resort festival grounds. The longer distance is point-to-point, winding through Virginia Lake, West Reno neighborhoods, and Idlewild Park before finishing at the same festival grounds. Costumes are encouraged, and a crowd-judged costume contest follows the race.

The longer course starts at a running store on the other side of the city, so organizers recommend parking at the finish and taking a shuttle to the start. There is no shuttle back afterward, so plan your post-race logistics before you go. A finish-line festival wraps up the morning.

Common Questions About the Dirty Wookie 10K & 5K

Will I finish last at the Dirty Wookie 10K & 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 6.2 Miles field finished slower than 1:01:40, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:52:47, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Dirty Wookie 10K & 5K a good first 6.2 Miles?

A field of 692 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 6.2 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Dirty Wookie 10K & 5K?

The 6.2 Miles winner ran 32:46 while the median finisher took 1:01:40. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
