About the Colors for Hope 5K

This is a color run held in memory of Ava Rose VanderStelt, a young woman the community lost to suicide. Before the race begins, participants gather for a color toss, so by the time the course starts, the crowd is already bright and a little dusty. Proceeds go toward local high school scholarships and peer-led suicide prevention programs in area schools.

The morning opens with a welcome and sponsor recognition before the color toss kicks things off. Runners and walkers line up together shortly after. Age group awards are handed out at a ceremony once the field is in, covering a wide range of ages from young children through older adults.

Common Questions About the Colors for Hope 5K

Will I finish last at the Colors for Hope 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 32:39, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:12:18, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Colors for Hope 5K a good first 3.1 Miles?

It is a small race (175 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Colors for Hope 5K?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 19:42 while the median finisher took 32:39. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
