About the Color Me Mutt 5K & 1 Mile Color Walk/Run

The course runs through NASCAR SpeedPark and puts you through color stations where volunteers throw powdered dye on you as you pass. The powder is cornstarch-based and non-toxic, and throwers aim low so the color lands on your clothes rather than your face. Dogs are welcome but the color throwers leave them alone unless you ask otherwise. You can wave off color at any station if you prefer.

Packet pickup happens at the SpeedPark venue on the two evenings before the race, with race-morning pickup available for those who cannot make it early. After the run, there is a pet parade and costume contest open to anyone, whether or not they ran. The 5K is officially timed, with age-group awards for both men and women.

Common Questions About the Color Me Mutt 5K & 1 Mile Color Walk/Run

Will I finish last at the Color Me Mutt 5K & 1 Mile Color Walk/Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 36:53, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:02:52, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Color Me Mutt 5K & 1 Mile Color Walk/Run a good first 3.1 Miles?

It is a small race (105 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Color Me Mutt 5K & 1 Mile Color Walk/Run?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 22:17 while the median finisher took 36:53. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
