About the Charleston Distance Run

The course starts at the State Capitol and heads through downtown before climbing into hillside neighborhoods, so there is real elevation to deal with. It comes back down along the riverfront, which is the more forgiving stretch. A shorter, flat option runs concurrently for those who want the atmosphere without the hills.

Both the Capitol complex and a nearby stadium have free parking. Bib pickup on race morning happens close to the start line, at the corner where Kanawha Boulevard meets California Street, and the window is short, so arriving early matters.

Common Questions About the Charleston Distance Run

Will I finish last at the Charleston Distance Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 15 Miles field finished slower than 2:21:47, and the last recorded finisher came in around 3:57:17, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Charleston Distance Run a good first 15 Miles?

A field of 321 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 15 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Charleston Distance Run?

The 15 Miles winner ran 1:19:54 while the median finisher took 2:21:47. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
