About the Charleston Winter Series

This is a series of road races held on winter afternoons, all starting from a pharmacy school parking lot. The races benefit Charleston Parks and Recreation youth programs, so the entry fees go somewhere local and specific. Each distance stands on its own, but running the full series earns a hoodie, which is the draw for most people who enter.

Registration is open at the start area in the hour before each race goes off, so you can show up and decide on the day. Age group awards go deep into the older brackets, which tends to bring out a solid spread of experienced runners.

Common Questions About the The Charleston Winter Series

Will I finish last at the Charleston Winter Series?

Almost certainly not. Half the 8K field finished slower than 48:36, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:20:14, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Charleston Winter Series a good first 8K?

It is a small race (123 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 8K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Charleston Winter Series?

The 8K winner ran 26:56 while the median finisher took 48:36. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
