About the Big Island International Marathon

The course runs along the old coastline of the Big Island, with the ocean as a near-constant presence. The route is an out-and-back shape, done twice, starting and finishing at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, so you return to the same spot where the morning began. Expect pavement with coastal scenery rather than trail or elevation.

Packet pickup and a small expo happen at the host hotel the day before, which keeps things convenient if you are already staying there. The hotel serves as the hub for the whole event, from bib collection through the finish.

Common Questions About the Big Island International Marathon

Will I finish last at the Big Island International Marathon?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:22:45, and the last recorded finisher came in around 4:23:15, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Big Island International Marathon a good first 13.1 Miles?

A field of 247 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Big Island International Marathon?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:24:33 while the median finisher took 2:22:45. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
