About the Annual Walter E. Brandon Sickle Cell 5K Walk/Fun Run
This Philadelphia race is a fundraiser tied to sickle cell disease awareness, honoring the memory of the organization's co-founder and, this year, a prominent hematologist and sickle cell specialist. The course is a road 5K open to both runners and walkers, with the two groups starting separately a few minutes apart.
The event runs most of the morning, with an opening ceremony before the start. Vendors set up throughout the grounds, and music plays across the event. It is as much a community gathering around a cause as it is a race morning.
