About the York Marathon and Half Marathon

The course starts on city streets at a YMCA, then shifts onto a rail trail that carries runners through the bulk of the distance. That trail surface is compacted crushed stone, which runs firm and smooth underfoot. The route is point-to-point, finishing near the Colonial Courthouse at Lafayette Plaza in the center of the city. The terrain is flat throughout, and the course is USATF certified.

Packet pickup runs the two days before the race at the same YMCA where the marathon begins, with a brief window on race morning as well. Parking is in the lot off Clarke Avenue adjacent to the building, and runners enter through the back. Water, Gatorade, and Gu gels are spaced out along the course, and first aid tents are positioned both on the trail and at the finish.

Common Questions About the York Marathon and Half Marathon

Will I finish last at the York Marathon and Half Marathon?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:04:15, and the last recorded finisher came in around 4:32:44, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the York Marathon and Half Marathon a good first 13.1 Miles?

A field of 390 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the York Marathon and Half Marathon?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:15:18 while the median finisher took 2:04:15. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
