About the WMU Turkey Trot

The WMU Turkey Trot runs on campus in Kalamazoo, organized through the university itself rather than a road-race company, which gives it a different texture than a typical city race. The crowd skews toward students, faculty, and their families. There is a costume contest alongside the running and walking divisions, so expect some creative interpretations of the Thanksgiving theme at the start line.

Packet pickup the evening before is at the Student Recreation Center, in the indoor tennis courts. Race-morning registration closes shortly before the start, so arriving early gives you time to sort things out without rushing.

Common Questions About the WMU Turkey Trot

Will I finish last at the WMU Turkey Trot?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 30:46, and the last recorded finisher came in around 58:37, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the WMU Turkey Trot a good first 5K?

With 803 finishers there are runners at every pace, so you are never out on your own. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the WMU Turkey Trot?

The 5K winner ran 16:50 while the median finisher took 30:46. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
