About the Winter Trail Fest Half Marathon and 5 Mile - Eastside

The course runs through Island Lake Recreation Area on rolling singletrack trail. Winter conditions are part of the deal: snow, slush, ice, and mud all show up depending on the year, and the trail does not get groomed for comfort. Both distance options also have ruck divisions, which is uncommon for a winter trail race. The later start gives the morning a chance to warm slightly before anyone heads out.

Parking is near the beach access at Island Lake, with attendants on site to direct traffic. A Michigan Recreation Passport gets you into the state park; without one, there is a day-use fee at the gate. Packet pickup happens race morning, so there is no separate trip the day before unless you want to preview the course at the informal group run held a few weeks out.

Common Questions About the Winter Trail Fest Half Marathon and 5 Mile - Eastside

Will I finish last at the Winter Trail Fest Half Marathon and 5 Mile - Eastside?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5 Miles field finished slower than 1:06:30, and the last recorded finisher came in around 2:12:23, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Winter Trail Fest Half Marathon and 5 Mile - Eastside a good first 5 Miles?

It is a small race (197 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Winter Trail Fest Half Marathon and 5 Mile - Eastside?

The 5 Miles winner ran 38:58 while the median finisher took 1:06:30. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
