About the White Pine Thaw Marathon Relay

The course runs out-and-back on the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail, a paved rail trail through low-traffic stretches of countryside north of Comstock Park. Teams split the route into legs, with each runner handing off to the next before the course turns back south. The trail is plowed ahead of race day, so snow and ice are usually managed, though conditions on a late-winter morning in Michigan can vary.

The race finishes near Vitale's Restaurant on West River Drive, where food and drinks are available inside right after you finish. Parking around the venue fills up, and the organizers ask teams to carpool. Packet pickup the day before is at Third Nature Brewing, a local spot that sponsors the event and is worth the stop.

Common Questions About the White Pine Thaw Marathon Relay

Will I finish last at the White Pine Thaw Marathon Relay?

Almost certainly not. Half the 26.2 Miles field finished slower than 4:09:21, and the last recorded finisher came in around 5:25:28, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the White Pine Thaw Marathon Relay a good first 26.2 Miles?

It is a small race (43 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 26.2 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the White Pine Thaw Marathon Relay?

The 26.2 Miles winner ran 3:10:57 while the median finisher took 4:09:21. That spread points to a relatively quick field, so expect a competitive front end.
