About the Virginia Marathon (Full/Merikos/Half/10k/5k)
The course runs through horse farm country outside Middleburg, past stone fences, rolling pastures, and long stretches of shade. The roads are mostly paved with some gravel mixed in. Runners doing the full marathon or the Merikós distance head up Bull Run Mountain, which means serious climbing and descending; the shorter distances stay in the gentler countryside. Everyone starts and finishes at a school just outside downtown.
Packet pickup runs the afternoon before at a running store in Leesburg, with race-morning pickup available at the start. The start area is at The Hill School, close enough to Middleburg's downtown that you can walk to coffee or a restaurant before or after.
