About the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle Turkey Trot

The course runs on the grounds of a technical institute and mixes pavement, grass, and trail. It is mostly flat, with a few gentle rolls and a grassy switchback section on one slope. Strollers and leashed dogs are both welcome, which tends to shape the crowd you run with on Thanksgiving morning.

Packet pickup is available the evening before at the United Way office, and again on race morning at the venue before the start. The event collects food donations for local backpack programs at the registration area, so bringing something along is part of the tradition here.

Common Questions About the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle Turkey Trot

Will I finish last at the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle Turkey Trot?

Almost certainly not. Half the 3.1 Miles field finished slower than 36:19, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:08:55, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle Turkey Trot a good first 3.1 Miles?

A field of 448 is big enough that you will have company at your pace without feeling lost in a crowd. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 3.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle Turkey Trot?

The 3.1 Miles winner ran 16:04 while the median finisher took 36:19. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
