About the United Way of Fairfield County Annual 5K Run

The course runs on a closed loop at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds, which keeps things contained and easy to follow. It is flat ground for the most part, the kind of surface you find at a fairgrounds, and the route brings you back to where you started without any navigation to think about.

Local businesses show up as teams, competing for a traveling participation trophy awarded by company size, so there tends to be a solid group presence alongside individual runners. A food drive runs alongside the race, with donations going to a backpack program for kids, so bringing a few pantry items is worth doing.

Common Questions About the United Way of Fairfield County Annual 5K Run

Will I finish last at the United Way of Fairfield County Annual 5K Run?

Almost certainly not. Half the 5K field finished slower than 35:17, and the last recorded finisher came in around 1:02:31, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the United Way of Fairfield County Annual 5K Run a good first 5K?

It is a small race (105 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 5K, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the United Way of Fairfield County Annual 5K Run?

The 5K winner ran 18:03 while the median finisher took 35:17. That spread points to a broad, mostly recreational field rather than a race dominated by club runners.
