About the Trail to Tryon Holiday Half, 10K & 5K

The courses run through downtown New Bern, past waterfront parks, and into residential neighborhoods before returning to the start and finish area beside Tryon Palace, which sits along the Trent River. Despite the name, this is a road race; the "Trail to Tryon" refers to the city's colonial history, not the terrain underfoot. The route is the same for all three distances, so spectators can watch from one spot.

All three distances start together at the palace grounds, which makes it easy to meet up afterward. Post-race, the Bates Commons area fills with vendors and a gathering crowd. A bag check is available near the start and finish if you want to leave layers before heading out.

Common Questions About the Trail to Tryon Holiday Half, 10K & 5K

Will I finish last at the Trail to Tryon Holiday Half, 10K & 5K?

Almost certainly not. Half the 13.1 Miles field finished slower than 2:04:26, and the last recorded finisher came in around 3:31:40, so there is a long tail of runners behind the middle of the pack. Most fields are far slower than people expect.

Is the Trail to Tryon Holiday Half, 10K & 5K a good first 13.1 Miles?

It is a small race (157 finishers), which is friendlier and less intimidating than a big-city event, though the field thins out. There is no qualifying time, and the finish-time spread above shows how varied the field really is. If it is your first 13.1 Miles, that spread matters more than the winner's time.

How competitive is the Trail to Tryon Holiday Half, 10K & 5K?

The 13.1 Miles winner ran 1:19:30 while the median finisher took 2:04:26. That spread points to a mixed field, with a competitive front and a big recreational middle.
